Art Tutorials and Career Coaching
Artists Resources with Linda Blondheim

Studying with a professional artist can jump start your career or your hobby. Finding the right teacher for you means thinking about what you want from a career coach or art teacher.

Many artists want more than just classes or workshops. They are excited about their art and want to improve to the best of their potential.

Over the years I've developed many lesson plans and study materials. I now offer these informative instructions in various forms, like Study Notebooks, Online Painting Lessons, Career Coaching, a Critique Service, etc. I believe these artist resources can be a great benefit to those seeking additional help.

Virtual Learning

I have had several queries about the idea of virtual learning and how it works. I have had great success with my private online students and the two marketing virtual Think Tanks I created. I decided about a year ago that it is time for me to make the transition from traditional studio and plein air workshops and classes, to online E-Classes.

I have created about eight E-Classes which I teach one at a time in 6 week increments. I create a private blog for each class. Class members have permission to post to and read the blog, but no one else can read it. I post a new lesson each week, with photos, techniques, notes from the studio and each week’s assignment. After four weeks, we have a two week time frame to finish assignments, have more involved discussion, critique, and Q&A, wrapping up the unit of study.

Advantages

There are many:

You have the luxury of studying at your own pace.

You have as much Q&A time as you want.

You have thoughtful and useful critique of your work in a non-threatening environment. Group or private, whichever you prefer.

There are no geographic barriers.

No traveling expenses.

Reasonable fees.

Study in your pajamas if you want to.

Sign up with a friend and do the class work together.

You have easy access to all notes, assignments, feedback and materials to print out and save in your notebook.

Small numbers of students and individual attention. Classes are limited to 10 students.

A good variety of landscape subjects. I can create a class tailored to your interest.

When you consider the time and expenses of travel to workshops, virtual learning is very attractive and easy. Many professional painters are making the transition to virtual teaching to accomodate their student's busy schedules as well as their own.

My Next E-Class

Giving your Acrylic Landscape Paintings an Oils Quality

I have been working with acrylics for about 10 years now having come from an oil painting experience of about 30 years. My goal at the outset of my acrylic experience has been to make them look as close to my oils in style and color palette as possible. This has been no small challenge, as they are entirely different mediums with very different technique. The tube color, though named the same is quite different too between the two mediums.

My technique has at last caught up with my desire and has become fairly seamless with my oils.  In fact, many of my patrons are drawn to the acrylic paintings first, thinking they are oils.

This unit of study is based on my research and technique to specifically emulate an “oil like” look to acrylics.

This class is designed for experienced painters who have either studied oils or acrylics or perhaps both, but who have been unsuccessful in keeping a cohesive look to both mediums. It is for anyone who is dissatisfied with their current acrylic work, either due to palette disharmony or due to flat tight brushwork and hard edges.

Beginners are welcome, but it may be difficult for you. If you are an advanced painter, this may be too easy for you. This is designed for painters who know basic acrylic technique but are ready to move on a bit further. You must have a digital camera or scanner to take this class as we will be posting images of our exercises and paintings to the blog.

We will be using a private blog for this class.  You will be given an invitation to be an author on the blog and you will receive automatic email updates for comments to each weekly lesson. We will post our comments under the lessons in the main post and view each others’ exercises and paintings as we move along.  I will of course, do critiques for you each week for the group to see.

Our focus for this class will be brushwork, edgework, color mixing, and glazing. I will post studio notes relating to technique, and use my own paintings as a visual aid for the class.

This is designed to be a four week unit of study, but I realize that we are all busy and tied up with life. I will post a new lesson each Monday on the blog. You can either do them weekly or you can play catch-up over a period of 6 weeks. I am building two extra weeks into the course for those of you who need it. The lesson will be up for 2 weeks after the last one is posted and I will be reading the blog during that two week for comments and to give critiques.

The blog will have a format of the assignment and my notes each Monday. The comment section is for all correspondence of questions and answers. Post your images on the blog as new posts and I will edit them and critique under the images of your paintings each week.

I will critique one painting a week per student in addition to the class. This is not required, but is given to you as an extra perk.

A class outline and materials list will be given to participants

The fee for the class is 100.00 for the 6 week class, which includes 4 lessons, critiques, and all Q&A  you desire.

This class will be limited to 10 students. We will begin on July 6, 2009 .

Testimonials

Color Mixing the Florida Landscape Art Camp

Just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed the color mixing workshop.  It is obvious you put a tremendous amount of thought and energy into its planning to make it such a wonderful learning and growth opportunity for us.  Every need was taken care of for us...all we had to do was put our learning hats on and paint.  Thank you (and you family, too) for the wonderfully  prepared lunch.  It was so relaxing to be able to sit back and chat with the other artists. It wasn't so comfortable at the time, but thank you for pushing us beyond our comfort zone in order to learn.

Color Mixing the Florida Landscape Art Camp

I was treated so well and FED great food! I need to go back on my cabbage soup diet now LOL! I have a whole new perspective on color and with the trusty notebook with more exercises she gave us, I am going to learn more and hopefully it will improve my work! The one think I found so cool about these color charts is they are invaluable to me for how to get to a certain color especially if you are using a limited palette for any reason. I wish I lived closer to Linda -- I would probably be stalking her at her door for her knowledge and her food :) Oh well, I do plan to go back up there again soon and may be force my brain to learn something else while hugging studio dog :)

I wanted to mention how much I like the Teaching a Workshop information packet I purchased from you. It was worth EVERY dollar! I highly recommend it to others.-

Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks on the great
workshop you conducted at Honeymoon Island on Friday. I know everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

I though the focus of the workshop was right on target of what we all
need to keep uppermost in our minds when we start to paint--values and
composition! The notebooks you gave to us were outstanding--the best I've even
received at any workshop! I am so impressed with the effort you put
forth to make it a wonderful day for everyone. Thank you and I hope to
paint with you again some time.

Linda has continued to amazed me with her comprehensive help, insight, ideas, giving nature, and enthusiasm as a coach. I began working with Linda’s Online Artist Coaching Service in April of 2007. She works with my ideas and desires, and leads me to a sharp, focused direction. Gaining that focused work schedule has been invaluable. I am now making the best use of my time, instead of running in many directions with no end point and no expected result. Linda is forth coming with knowledge and assistance, straightforward, honest, and adds a touch of humor to her coaching. She has helped me to discover my best, and uncover strength I didn't know I had. I am thrilled at my progress since my work with Linda, and I am eagerly awaiting our continued sessions together.

Linda,
I just felt like I should tell you how much I've enjoyed reading your blog and painters tips. Not only is the information helpful, precise and specific with illustrated examples, but it's full of great ideas and encouragement. I hope I can remember some of your great ideas and painters tips when I need them!

I've found it very validating and interesting and wanted to formally thank you for sharing your knowledge with people like me!

Your tutorials have been a tremendous help already to get me out of this slump I've been in since July. I've not gotten through all the exercises yet, but I'm getting there. Your style of teaching is so easy to grasp, & your web site is down to earth. You make art seem just like a part of life & not up high out of reach. I've told a couple of artist friends about it.    I'm doing a painting for my daughter-in-law's birthday & have followed your "steps." My artist daughter thinks it's one of my best in about 3 years. The color theory tutorial was just what I needed to mix lively neutrals. I even experimented with mixing some of my own ( at least some I didn't know about). Thanks so much.  Best Wishes, Kay

Regarding Plein Air Summer 2006

I have never had such thorough instruction. At the university we were shown little more than just how to mix the paints and then just told to go at it. I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying the summer sessions. Thank you for your attention to us.

It's been about 8 years since I've taken any kind of class or workshop, well this past week I made an exception. It was an Alla Prima workshop with Linda Blondhiem, a plein-air painter known around the southeast region. She instructed us with many exciting exercises including some 15 minute studies (which I posted several of mine above). She is an awesome instructor with a library of knowledge in both art and marketing art. A must do workshop if you get the opportunity.

Thursday I was in an all day paint out work shop at Mead Gardens put on by Linda Blondheim and she is an excellent teacher! Got a 16x20 1/2 done in the afternoon from that and I am very proud of the composition with the help and guidance of Linda. I am going to be using all her tips from now on.

I honestly think you are one of the best Plein air teachers I've come across. The buzz is still on about the wonderful experience and all were very happy that they were in attendance. I sent a message to Plein Air Florida.  Thanks again.
