Vero Beach Residency Notes
I’ve returned from a brief residency in Vero Beach. It is a lovely coastal town, just the right size. It has enough size for shopping but small enough to be easy to drive through and navigate. I love the beach side. There are lovely old neighborhoods with charming floral street names. The landscaping is very lush and exotic compared to my part of Florida. I am lucky to have a friend who graciously lends me her condo off A1A for these painting residencies.
The visit was short, due to unforeseen circumstances, but my friend Mary Jane and I dd a bit of exploring while there. We toured McKee Gardens, a wonderful botanical garden right in the city. It is quite a treat! We took several reference photos along the paths which will eventually become paintings.
The condo is in the perfect location, with a lovely back covered patio, chairs for comfort and a table. it sits right on the lagoon canal and we watched Manatees, Anhingas and Pelicans. I heard a Dolphin in the water one night, though I couldn’t see him.
My favorite store in Vero Beach is Corey’s Pharmacy. It is a lovely walk back in time, with many of the original building features lovingly preserved. It has all kinds of fun stuff, beachwear, and of course the pharmacy, manned by Dr Mark. What a sweet gentleman he is, with a lovely family.
On our way back, we explored a bit at the Merritt Island Wildlife Preserve, always a favorite. The main birding roads are closed due to damage an high water from the storms, but some side trails were open. We got some more reference photos there.
Vero Beach is a great town, with much to offer.
More musings for artists and collectors to come…
Today’s Restaurant Reviews
I always like to eat breakfast at restaurants when I travel.
It is in the Vero Beach/Ft Pierce area in one of those new shopping centers.
It was really good. No ambiance to speak of. Booths line the walls. The breakfast was superb. Properly cooked eggs, delicious grilled potatoes and crisp toast. There were a variety of options on the menu.
The Lemon Tree
This is a favorite for me. It is a lovely bright space. It has an interesting, more eclectic menu, but with old favorites too. It offers a large variety of hot teas, good coffee and leaves a little basket of miniature muffins on the table with your order, a nice little treat. The service is efficient. The staff is friendly. It is on the Ocean Drive where all of the nice shops are, row after row along the street. It is right down the block from Corey’s Pharmacy.
